The Outer Banks SCORE Chapter serves clients in Dare, Currituck, Camden, Perquimans, Tyrrel, and portions of Hyde counties.

The Outer Banks SCORE Chapter has counselors at the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Just drop in.

Here are our Counselors, their skills and experience:

 

John Rorer - Chairman

John is actively involved as a SCORE counselor to small business but also finds time to be a Board member of Currituck Kids charitable fund and heads a non=profit small business incubator.  John was recently the Chairman of the Currituck County Board of Commissioners and his background includes being an Registered NASD Investment Principal, a sales manager for an international RV resort system, a partner in an accounting firm, and CFO of a real estate development and building firm.

With 15 years of experience in Sales and Marketing, Tax Planning and Finance, and 10 years experience in Investment Securities and Internet Marketing and Web Development, plus his experience in Public Administration, John can provide expert counseling is several areas. John started building and development on the Outer Banks in 2000 and has been a resident of Currituck County since 2004.

 

 

Bob Burk - Vice Chair

Bob brings a “triple play” of career experience to SCORE having been involved in non-profit start-ups and management, corporate marketing management and as an entrepreneur. He was the Executive Director of the Norwalk Seaport Association and Connecticut’s largest festival, Marketing and Communications Manager for 27 years for King Industries a specialty chemical company where he still consults and owned or partnered in a number of small businesses including the New England Brewing Company, Shorehaven Inn on Topsail Island and Days of Futures Past Antiques & Collectibles. Bob’s special expertise is in the field of Special Events and Tradeshow Marketing. He holds Diamond Level Certification in Tradeshow Marketing (CTSM) from Northern Illinois University and Exhibitor Magazine. In 2014 Bob was one of the first recipients of a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the Exhibit Industry and the CTSM Program. He has served on the faculty of Exhibitor Show and has taught marketing courses for the American Marketing Association. 

 

 

Teuta Shabani Towler - Secretary

Teuta Shabani Towler is the owner of Mitro Digital Marketing and she is grateful to the SCORE mentors for helping her start her businesses. She became a Certified SCORE mentor in December 2014 and has been mentoring new and established businesses, mostly on digital marketing.

Towler is originally from Kosovo but moved to the Outer Banks in 2004. She graduated from a nursing school but hated sticking people with the needles.  She switched gears and studied computer programing. She worked as a programmer and instructor for two years. During the Kosovo-Serbian war she discovered the power of information and her love for journalism. After she survived the war, she went to college for journalism.  She uses her coding and writing skills for Search Engine Optimization and other marketing content.  She published a women’s magazine in Kosovo, Women’s Life, a crime novel, Murders and Makeup, and coauthored an anthology, Mothers.  Prior to starting her businesses, she did freelance writing for the Outer Banks Voice, Outer Banks Homes, Wedding Guides, and the Outer Banks Child Magazine. 

 

Marv Register - Secretary

Marv is a retired US Navy Division Director who prior to his Navy service worked for Uniroyal as a Development Engineer and a Plant Engineer. He was also employed by Honeywell as a Field Sales Engineer.

Marv has nearly 40 years of experience and in addition to general business counseling can provide expert counseling in Service, Engineering, and Developmental Engineering and Sales. Marv retired to the Outer Bank in 2005 where he has been an active SCORE Counselor.

 

 

Bob Logan - Treasurer

CPA, Small business owner Nags Head (5 yrs) Commercial Landlord - Nags Head; Payroll Manager, Budget Officer, A/R Supervisor for large (30,000 empl) company, Ret. Naval Aviator (22yrs).  He specializes in accounting and business taxation.

 

Tom O'Brien - Immediate Past Chairman

Tom is a retired Manager of E I Dupont and Swales Aerospace. His background includes 38 years in marketing, 30 years in business planning and 10 years in advertising/promotion and facility management.

Tom's experience in sales, public relations, cost management and administration for both large and small companies can provide expert counseling in these areas.

Tom has been a visitor of the Outer Banks since 1962. He became a property owner in 1999 and a permanent resident in 2002. Tom and his wife Kay live in Duck; N.C.

Tom has served his community in a leadership position with All Saints Episcopal Church, Past President of Schooner Ridge Prop. Owners Assoc., past Executive Council member for the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina, member of the Outer Banks Chorus and past Chairman of SCORE.

OBX resident since 2002, property owner since 1999, visitor since 1962. Work experience includes sales, marketing, business planning, cost management, public relations, and administration, for both large and small companies. Volunteer leadership positions at church, homeowners' association, SCORE.

Lyle Cady

Lyle is currently an Associate Professor at Averett University. His career positions include Director of Strategic Initiatives for Thermo Fisher, COO for Jouan Inc, Manufacturing and Sales Manager for Heat Systems Ultra Sonic and Sarstedt Inc, and Laboratory Manager for Nabisco. Lyle was also a Research Microbiologist for L'Oreal of Paris.

Lyle provides excellent counseling in marketing and sales where he has had over 20 years of business experience. Lyle also has over 10 years of experience in both general management and acquisitions and finance. He is also experienced in international trade and the import export business. Lyle is active in Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church Knights of Columbus.

 

 

John Caporal

John is retired with nearly 30 years of service as a civilian serving with the United States Air Force in a variety of senior positions.   His expertise covers many areas, highlighted by extensive leadership in the area of procurement and contracting.  He also has very significant experience in personnel management and development.  John ‘s early experience as a teacher and  in manufacturing gives him a  broad background from which he can provide expert and effective business counselling.

 

David Feyrer

David Feyrer is a general business and process consultant with broad experience in leadership, organizational management, and project management. This experience is coupled with extensive skills and experience in using the latest information management tools to facilitate effective organizational development. He has a BS in Economics from Muhlenberg College and a Masters in Divinity from the Philadelphia Divinity School. As an Army OCS graduate, he served 38 years (3 years active, 35reserve). His last position was State Chaplain in Connecticut. He has been an Executive in the retail automobile business. He led the Y2K compliance program for a world renowned research center, and developed software tools for use in legal compliance activities. In addition, he has had significant experience in the building development field.

 

Jay Gouldin

Jay has an extensive background in owning, and managing retail businesses to include an auto parts store, and a service station. He has also represented a major auto parts manufacturers here and in Australia. He has been a top producing real estate broker and has taught real estate and mentored new agents entering the field. In addition to being an active SCORE Counselor, he is an active member in local civic clubs.

 

Janet Jarrett

Janet Jarrett’s professional background includes 15 years in the telecommunication industry and over 23 years in healthcare.

Her experience in planning and development, budgeting, and operations of an outpatient surgery center, independent diagnostic testing facility, and multi-specialty physician practices translates into counseling skills for company startups, implementing productivity-enhancement systems and customer service.

Janet resides in Duck with her husband Chuck and has a passion for improving the health of our community. She is vice-chair of the Community Care Clinic of Dare; serves on the Access to Healthcare Taskforce, NCMOM Dare Dental Clinic Committee, CareShare Advisory Committee and ECU Dental School Advisory Board. She is presently serving as Interim Executive Director for the Albemarle Hospital Foundation.

 

Tim McKeithan

Tim is a retired US Navy Supply Corp Commander with 21 years of experience in Logistics and Procurement. He is a Certified Medical Practice Executive MBA & CMPE and was Administrator of the Group For Women OB/GYN Practice in Norfolk & Chesapeake.

Tim can provide expert counseling in Military Procurement and Logistics, Financial Planning and Marketing & Advertising with 20 years of business experience in those fields. Tim can also provide counseling in Retirement Plan Administration where he has nearly 10 years of experience.

Tim retired to the Outer Banks after enjoying several vacations in the area. Currently for the Town of Duck he is a Member of the Board of Adjustment, Member of the Municipal Property Master Plan Advisory Committee and a Jazz Festival Volunteer. Tim is active in the All Saints Episcopal Church doing outreach work there also.

 

Howard B. Miller

Howard is a retired Manager of Financial Planning and Accounting for Elliott Co. Div. of United Technologies. His background includes 30 years experience in Accounting and 20 years experience in budgeting, inventory control, financial analysis, long range planning and acquisitions. Howard can provide exceptional counseling in these areas.

Howard has served his community as a Past Commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Treasurer on the board of Duck Wood Country Club, Chairman of the Finance Committee for Session O. B. Presbyterian Church and a past Chairman and active member of SCORE for the past 12 years.

 

   

Jack Overman

USN Aviator (ret); Asst.Plant Mgr., PeterBilt Motors (Truck Mfg); Plant Manager, Alofs Automotive Parts Manufacturing. Executive/General management; QC; field service & warranty; materials & manufacturing management; purchasing; nventory control: process control.

 

 

Bill Wheeler

Bill has twenty five years experience as a real estate broker and business owner on Outer Banks. Past president of OBX Assoc of Realtors, Albemarle Area Development Association; past vice chair of Dare County Planning Board.
