These New Englanders are Building Dream Careers in a Job Market Turned Upside Down

Published August 17, 2021

The Boston Globe profiled New Englanders who are building dream careers in a job market turned upside down, including SCORE client Stefanie Corbin. She launched a Main Street bookstore, Footprints Café, in Buzzards Bay, Mass. with help from her SCORE mentors after being laid off from her restaurant job during COVID.

As a Black- and woman-owned business, the bookstore focuses on bringing diversity in a town that’s 92 percent white by filling the shelves with fiction and nonfiction by writers of color, as well as those that feature diverse personalities and characters. “I come in every day early and it’s because I can’t wait to get here,” she says, adding, “I’m not one to listen to naysayers. The minute someone says you can’t do something, I’m the one saying, ‘Yeah, OK. Watch me.’”
